The Xerces (Xerces2 with the 2.0 release) Java Parser project provides an XML parser that allows you to read, create, and modify XML documents. It is the next generation of high performance, fully compliant XML parsers in the Apache Xerces family. While Xerces has been ported to both C++ and Perl, we include the Java version. It supports a number of XML standard APIs, including:

Namespaces 1.1
DOM 2 and 3
SAX 2.0.2
DTD and Schema
XInclude 1.0
JAXP 1.3.

Xerces also includes the Xerces Native Interface (XNI), a complete framework for building parser components and configurations.

Xerces can be used alone, but the syntax is sometimes decidedly un-Java-like. We include several wrapper libraries that provide a friendlier Java interface to Xerces: JDOM and dom4j are two popular options. To include XSLT and XPath capabilities in your application, Xalan can be added.
