The POI project consists of API (Application Programming Interface) components for manipulating the various file formats based upon Microsoft's OLE 2 Compound Document format with pure Java applications. In short, you can read and write MS Excel files using Java. In a coming version, you'll be able to read and write Word files using Java as well. POI has a complete API for porting other OLE 2 Compound Document formats as well.

Use the HSSF API to read or write Excel files using Java. Use the POIFS API if you need to read a doc written in OLE 2 Compound Document Format. You can also use POIFS, the oldest and most stable part of the project, if you need to your application to interact with software running on the windows platform.
