The Log4j project provided a heavily used logging framework long before the JDK 1.4 logging implementation came into existence.

Versions of Log4j before 1.2.11 are under the Apache Software License 1.1. Later versions are under the Apache Software License 2.0.

Log4j is more configurable and arguably more powerful than the JDK standard, which is one reason why it remains the logging mechanism of choice for many open source projects. It works with all JDKs back to 1.1 and is therefore available to legacy Java applications, another key reason for its continued popularity.
