GNU Privacy Guard provides the community a complete and free implementation of the OpenPGP (pretty good privacy) standard defined by RFC2440. The 1.x branch of GnuPG is known as the portable, standalone version as compared to the 2.x branch. The 2.x branch has enhancements that complicate implementation.
