The DocBook XML schema works well for writing books and papers about computers. It is available for several languages, including RELAX NG, SGML, XML DTDs and W3C XML Schema. It follows the syntax of XML, and is converted to other formats by XSLT Stylesheets. 

DocBook offers a markup language with an extensive set of tags to describe document content. Tags such as book, article and chapter help define the structure of a file. You can use DocBook XML's modular design to customize it to your needs. It does not specify how the final document will look; all of the presentation issues are handled in style sheets.

Usage Notes:

You can use the DocBook schema to mark your documents to easily extract and index their information. While it is optimal for computer documentation, you can use DocBook for any other type of documentation as well. It does have an extremely large tag library, which means a steep learning curve.
