License Class: Apache Modified Licenses

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) states that this license, the Apache Software License version 1, has been superseded by the Apache License, version 2.0. Any new projects considering the Apache license should use version 2.0. However, this license is still used by some projects.

Version 1.1 of this license removes a clause requiring derived products to include attribution in their advertising materials.

Some additional facts regarding the license include:

  • The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has approved this license as an Open Source license. Open Source approved licenses comply with the OSI criteria. Such criteria include provisions supporting both the free redistribution of aggregate and derived products, and the requirement that source code be made available with the distributions of aggregate and derivative products.
  • This license is not classified as a Free Software License. Free Software licenses meet the FSF's criteria for supporting the user's freedom to run, study, redistribute and improve the program.
